The historical importance of Marne castle is due to the fact to be an impregnable fortalice, being secured on a rock between two rivers. During the struggle between guelfi and ghibellini it was many times theatre of bloody battles and at the beginning of 1404 it was destroyed by Pandolfo Malatesta's armed bands.

The June 3rd 1429 the venetian republic's senate allows the rebuilding. In the august of 1705 the german soldiers, during the secession wars to the spanish throne, sacked the castle. At the beginning of 1800 becames property of the Piatti Donati family that used it as a country residence. At the end of the century was bought by a consanguineous family of Colleoni that used it too as contry residence. The architect Angelini affirms that this building dates back at before of the year thousand.
